Samaritan Treatment and Recovery Services (STARS) Emergency Department (ED) Outreach Project – STARS ED Outreach
In 2018, Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital (SLCH), a CCCWN partner in Linn County, received a Rural Health Care Services Outreach Grant Program grant from the Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) for $599,921 to be spent over three years (June 1, 2018 – May 31, 2021). The grant supported the STARS ED Outreach Project which provided substance use disorder/opioid use disorder (SUD/OUD) services in East Linn County, OR.
Partnerships & Grant Activities
The STARS ED Outreach project involved a partnership between SLCH, STARS, C.H.A.N.C.E., Linn County Health Department, Family Tree Relief Nursery, and Milestones Family Recovery.
The STARS ED Outreach Project activities in East Linn County included:
- Establishing an emergency department (ED) protocol for working with a peer support specialist (PSS) when an overdose survivor or individual presented with opioid poisoning
- Hiring peer support specialists to work in the ED
- Educating providers and staff on the peer support specialist role to ensure effective integration into the ED
- Connecting individuals to treatment
- Developing a public media campaign and educational materials
- Conducting community 0outreach and distributing naloxone
